SHOT
Dialogue: Super tired from playing tennis. I’m shot! 총 맞았다고?!
테니스 치는데 피곤해. 완전히 지쳤어!
Common usage: Nice shot! (sports, photography, gun, arrow)
자주 쓰는 상황: 좋은 샷이야!/잘 쳤어! (운동, 사진 찍을때, 총, 화살)
It’s worth a shot = something worth trying; worth the effort
= You might not succeed but you might as well try.
- Getting into Seoul National University is hard, but it’s worth a shot.
- Passing level 6 at SDA is not easy, but it’s worth a shot.
밑전 본전아니야? = 한번 해볼만 하잖아, 노력해볼 필요가 있어. / 노력하면 잘 될꺼야.
= 성공은 못할지라도 해보는것도 좋을때.
- 서울대학교에 입학하는것은 힘즐겠지만, 한번 도전해볼만해
- SDA영어학원에서 6단계를 패스하는건 쉽지 않지만, 노력해볼꺼야
A shot in the dark = random guess; blind guess when you have no idea
- “How old are you?” “I have no idea, but I’ll just take a shot in the dark. 25?”
- “How did you know the answer?” “I didn’t. I just took a shot in the dark.”
맹사 = 추측, 억측, 어림짐작, 찍다.
- “몇살이에요?” “전혀 모르겠는데, 추측해보면, 25살?”
- “어떻게 아셨어요?” “몰랐어. 그냥 찍어봤어.”
Big shot = an important person (VIP); very influential person
- Eric is a big shot at Samsung. He is the Vice President of electronics.
- Steven Spielberg is a big shot in Hollywood.
빅 샷 = 거물, 중요 인물, 실력자. (VIP): 아주/정말 중요한 사람
Give it your best shot! = Try as hard as you can!
= 최선을 다 해봐!
- “Are you ready for your test tomorrow?” “No.” “Well, give it your best shot anyway!”
- I know it’s hard to beat Roger in tennis, but give it your best shot.
최선을 다해봐요!
- “내일 시험 준비 됐어?” “아니” “에이~그냥 최선을 다해서 봐~”
- 로저한테 테니스를 이긴다는 건 쉬운 일이 아니지…그래도 최선을 다해봐!

= Really tired!

나 완전히 지쳤어 (총 쏠때의 그 쏘다라는 의미 아니에요~)
= 정말 피곤해, 지쳤어, 맥이 다 빠졌어
- 방금 3시간동안 농구를 했어…완전히 지쳤어.
- 10시간 연속으로 공부하는데 완전히 기운 다 빠졌어!

When Koreans go out to drink, they often say “One shot!” when drinking the entire glass in one straight gulp. But this is Konglish! This type of drinking practice does not widely exist in the Western culture. But the closest expression is “bottoms up”!
